Hawaii Loa home fire destroys garage, Lexus

About 20 firefighters doused a garage fire on Hawaii Loa Ridge yesterday that caused an estimated $300,000 in damage.

Fire Capt. Terry Seelig said fire damage was confined to the garage, and the house, located at 966 Ikena Circle, remains habitable.

The fire was reported at 2:03 p.m. and extinguished at 2:51 p.m.

When firefighters arrived, the garage was fully engulfed in flames, Seelig said.

Damage to the 1,000-square-foot structure was estimated at $250,000, and $50,000 to its contents, which included a Lexus.

A man who lives at the house escaped without injury.

The cause remains under investigation.

 

Thief used weapon to rob Kalihi bank

Detectives were continuing to follow up on leads yesterday for a man who robbed a Kalihi bank Monday and got away with an undisclosed amount of cash.

At about 10:15 a.m., a man entered the Territorial Savings Bank branch at Kamehameha Shopping Center while brandishing a weapon and demanded money.

Police said the man covered his face with a shirt and wore a hat.

The man obtained an undisclosed amount of cash and fled.

The suspect faces a charge of first-degree robbery.

 

Police arrest man, 31, in assault on ex-wife

A 31-year-old Ewa Beach man faces second-degree sexual assault charges for allegedly sexually assaulting his ex-wife, also 31.

Police said the man went to his ex-wife's house in Waipahu at 6:20 a.m. Tuesday to pick up their children.

Instead, he allegedly sexually assaulted her. Police arrested him later that night at his home on suspicion of second-degree sexual assault.

Police said charges were pending conferral with prosecutors.

 

Pedestrian hit crossing road is on critical list

A 69-year-old Waipahu man was in critical condition yesterday at the Queen's Medical Center after being hit Tuesday night while crossing Fort Weaver Road.

Police said the pedestrian was not in a crosswalk when he was hit by a 2006 blue Chevrolet Blazer driven by a 49-year-old Ewa man at 7:40 p.m. The accident occurred about 1,075 feet north of Laulaunui Street near Hawaii Medical Center West.

The pedestrian suffered injuries to his head and the lower part of his body, police said.

 

Police say wife caused her husband's burns

Prosecutors charged a 29-year-old Salt Lake woman Monday with two counts of second-degree assault for allegedly burning her husband with an object.

Lea Meng was arrested at her Ala Nanu Street home Sunday morning after she allegedly burned her husband at 7:30 a.m.

Her bail was set at $11,000.
