Pano app on iPhone widens user's options

The iPhone has helped me shed the reputation I have with some of my friends as someone who takes pictures but never shares the end product. “;Not sharing”; wasn't intentional. It's just that when film was used, I would forget to develop the pictures. I still have rolls of undeveloped film holding memories of events long forgotten.

Digital cameras eliminate the extra steps and spending for prints. In the iPhone era you can snap, save and send photos in seconds. Recipients can then decide whether they want to make prints, or save it to their own hard drives or Flickr accounts.

Now the iPhone has a Pano app that allows users to take panoramic pictures. I wish I had this when I moved, when so many friends on the mainland asked me what the view is like from my new apartment.

The pictures can be taken vertically or horizontally. Just start at the left end of the view you're capturing, point and touch the camera icon. When you see the transparent guide appear on the left side of the screen, you're ready to take the next shot. Just line up items with the guide and touch the camera icon again, again and again. You can build a panorama with up to 16 pictures.

Let's say you didn't like how the shot you just took came out. No problem. Just touch the arrow on the bottom left of the screen, choose “;Back Up,”; then take the picture again.

A steady hand helps, but my photos looked seamless, even though I wasn't great at matching the transparent guide. In fact, I intentionally didn't match a couple of pictures just to see what would happen.

Once you've taken all the pictures, touch the check mark on the bottom right of the screen, then touch “;Make my pano now!”; A progress bar will appear while the pictures are being stitched together.

The final panoramic photo will be saved to your iPhone camera roll ready to e-mail anywhere around the world.

You may have guessed this, but I haven't developed any of my panoramic pictures, so I'm not sure how the resolution and stitching looks on, let's say, a poster-size photo. I'll leave that task up to you.
