Acclaimed poet Harjo to read her work

American Indian poet Joy Harjo will give a reading at 7 p.m. Thursday at the University of Hawaii-Manoa's art auditorium.
Harjo, a New Mexico resident who served as the UH English department's Distinguished Visiting Writer in 2003, will read from works that include seven books of poetry. Her latest work, “;For a Girl Becoming,”; is a coming-of-age book.
The poet has garnered acclaim throughout her career, earning such accolades as the New Mexico Governor's Award of Excellence in the Arts, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Native Writers Circle of the Americas and the William Carlos Williams Award from the Poetry Society of America.
Harjo is successful in the performing arts as well; she has released four award-winning CDs of original music and performs internationally with the Arrow Dynamics Band.
She also writes a column for her tribal newspaper, the Muscogee Nation News.
