» First place neighbor island winners of the Berry Co.'s Think Yellow, Go Green Telephone Directory Recycling Contest went to Waimea Canyon Middle School on Kauai; St. Joseph Elementary on the Big Island; Montessori Hale O Keiki on Maui, and Kualapu'u Elementary New Century Public School on Molokai. They each received $700. Lanai's only public school, Lanai High and Elementary, was awarded $250.

» Musician Dale M. Senaga, the City and County of Honolulu's 2009 Employee of the Year, began working for the city when computers were not available to most employees and used his own proficiency with technology to enable the Royal Hawaiian Band to reach out to diverse communities on Oahu. Senaga is also a volunteer who works with youth and entertains at nursing homes and care facilities.

» Karen K. Miyake, the City and County of Honolulu's 2009 Manager of the Year in charge of the Elderly Affairs Division, developed and implemented one of Hawaii's original resource center pilot sites aimed at improving the health status of the kupuna.

» Goodwill Industries of Hawaii has received the final installment of a $150,000 grant from the James & Abigail Campbell Family Foundation. The funds will be used for the construction of Goodwill's new Ohana Career and Learning Center in Kapolei, which will assist residents of Leeward Oahu in developing vocational and professional skills. It is scheduled to open in early 2010.
