Week spotlights styles of dance

The first-ever National Dance Week Hawaii, which celebrates the art form, starts today and runs through next Sunday.

The event offers discounted or free classes at participating dance studios; workshops from professional choreographers and companies; a fashion block party that showcases dance programs in schools and studios, local designers and live art; a choreographer's festival; and a “;King of the Island Battle”; showcasing street crews.

» 3 to 6 p.m. today: Free fashion block party at Aloha Tower Marketplace.

» 8 to 10 p.m. today: “;Hi-Dance: Choreographer's Festival”; audition classes with Hollywood (client list includes Lil Mama, Rhianna, Chris Brown and Eve) and Anthony Cardona (Sean Paul and Kanye West). Each choreographer will choose up to 10 dancers to be in his or her piece for next Sunday's performance at Fresh Cafe (time to be determined). $15 per class with choreographer, pre-registration required, Honolulu Dance Studio, 419 South St., Suite 107.

Film explores water problems

In honor of Earth Month, students in the East-West Center's Leadership Certificate Program are organizing a film symposium about the world water crisis.

“;FLOW”; (For the Love of Water) will be shown free at 5 p.m. today in Spalding Hall Auditorium on the UH-Manoa campus. According to the film's website, viewers are given “;a look at the people and institutions providing practical solutions to the water crisis and those developing new technologies.”;

A panel discussion and reception will follow the film. Call 942-3841.

Chorus looks for concert singers

The Honolulu Symphony Chorus is seeking singers for the August performances of Verdi's “;Requiem”; and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, presented by Oahu Choral Society with the Freiburg Symphony Orchestra from Germany and conductor Andreas Winnen as guests.

Qualified singers from the community will participate in concerts on Aug. 11 at the Pearl City Cultural Center (Verdi) and Aug. 13 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall (Beethoven).

While there are no formal auditions, voice quality and musicality will be evaluated for acceptance into the chorus. Singers should be prepared to discuss choral singing background and musical affiliations.

Rehearsals for the Verdi piece are at 7 p.m. Mondays, starting tomorrow, in Room 36 at the UH-Manoa Music Department.
