DBEDT to hold tax-credit fair
The Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism will host a free information fair about how incentives and tax credits can help businesses. The event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon May 5 at the Kapolei High School cafeteria. State and federal tax credits, Foreign Trade Zones, USDA Rural Developmental grants and renewable energy benefits will be among the topics. New tenants join Ward roster
The Ward retail and restaurant complex has welcomed five additional tenants.
At Ward Warehouse, Downtown Gifthings offers jewelry, fashion accessories, stationery, and travel and lunch bags. Eden in Love is a new boutique by the Wedding Cafe that carries lines of women's clothing, shoes and accessories different from its sister-store's bridal lines. Discount Mobile & Computer Repair offers mobile phone equipment, technical assistance and intake for off-site repairs.
Abracadabra, a kiosk at the Ward Entertainment Center, sells embroidered baseball caps; vintage, handmade and children's hats as well as jewelry, key chains and handbags. Jewel Flair, soon to open in Ward Centre, will carry jewelry by local, national and international designers.
FDIC shuts down 7 banks in Illinois
NEW YORK » Regulators shut down seven banks in Illinois yesterday, putting the number of U.S. bank failures this year at 57. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. took over four banks in Chicago: New Century Bank, with $485.6 million in assets; Citizens Bank & Trust Co., with $77.3 million in assets; Broadway Bank, with $1.2 billion in assets; and Lincoln Park Savings Bank, with $199.9 million in assets.
The FDIC also took over Amcore Bank of Rockford, which had $3.8 billion in assets; Peotone Bank and Trust Co. in Peotone, with $130.2 million in assets; and Wheatland Bank of Naperville, with $437.2 million in assets.
Securities valuation topic of talk
A chartered financial analysts' conference examining valuation and performance measurement standards of illiquid securities will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. May 13 at First Hawaiian Tower's Po'okela Room on the sixth floor.
Travis Harms, senior vice president of Mercer Capital Management, will examine requirements for measuring and disclosing fair value under generally accepted accounting principles. Karyn D. Vincent, the founder of Vincent Performance Services, will cover key requirements of the global investment performance standards.

» Design Partners Inc. has promoted Jay Ogawa to associate from project architect. He has 30 years of architecture experience, including 10 years at DPI as well as positions at INK Architects, Sansei Architects, AM Partners, Thomas Agawa and Associates, and Design Engineering Inc.
» The 2010 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award went to semifinalists Tesoro Hawaii Corp. of Kapolei and the Hawaii state government. The award is the U.S. government's highest recognition given to employers for exceptional support of their employees serving in the Guard and Reserve.
» Maui Jim Sunglasses has donated $100,000 to Hale Makua Health Services. A portion of the donation will be used to purchase Tobii ATI specialized computer assistive equipment to help several residents whose activities have been compromised by an accident or illness to use computers to communicate.
» The American Hospital Association, in partnership with Healthcare Association of Hawaii, has named Phyllis Dendle as Hawaii's Grassroots Champion. She is a government relations director with Kaiser Permanente Hawaii and has been with the company for 13 years.
