Saint Louis improves to 24-3

POSTED: Thursday, April 22, 2010

The Saint Louis Crusaders know all about redemption.

They live it, too. Third baseman Kalei Contrades socked a game-tying double in the bottom of the sixth, and center fielder Kaeo Aliviado delivered a game-winning single in the eighth as Saint Louis rallied for a 4-3 win over Kamehameha in extra innings at Ala Wai Community Park.

Saint Louis improved to 6-0 in the second round of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. A win at Mid-Pacific tomorrow would seal the round and the ILH title for the Crusaders (24-3 overall), ranked No. 2 in the Star-Bulletin Baseball Top 10.

Kamehameha (4-2) missed an opportunity to knock Saint Louis off its perch, but remains in contention for one of the league's three state-tournament berths. The Warriors (20-13-1 overall) meet Punahou tomorrow in a key matchup.

The Crusaders secured their 10th win in a row despite committing three errors behind starting pitcher Christopher Chung, who outlasted Kamehameha's Jordyn Ah Chong. Both hurlers went the distance.

Chung, a right-hander, kept his cool, striking out seven and walking just two in eight innings. He hadn't started since the first round ended more than three weeks ago, but had excellent command of his splitter and slider.

“;I felt like I could throw longer. I felt fresh every inning,”; he said.

It was Contrades and Aliviado —and Chung — who figured into the mix with uncharacteristic miscues. Contrades was picked off first base in the fourth inning, but came through in the sixth with a game-tying double down the left-field line, scoring Jordan Fukumoto from second base.

Derek Nakasato gave Saint Louis a 3-2 lead when he scored from third on a sacrifice fly by Ka'ai Tom.

Kamehameha tied it with an unearned run in the top of the seventh after Chung threw an errant pickoff ball that caromed off the helmet of Bryson Kenolio, who advanced to third base. Kenolio then scored on a single by pinch hitter Kash Kalohelani. The ball rolled under Aliviado, the center fielder, and gave Kalohelani a chance to score, but he was thrown out at home plate by shortstop Kainoa Inafuku.

Chung retired the side in order in the eighth.

Nakasato fought back from an 0-2 count to single off Ah Chong. After he moved to second on a wild pitch, Ah Chong intentionally walked Moses Samia and struck out Contrades.

Aliviado then struck the first pitch up the middle to score Nakasato easily for the winning run.
