POSTED: Wednesday, April 21, 2010

Tomorrow is the deadline to register to vote in the special election for the 1st Congressional District race to replace former U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie.

Eligible voters in the district that runs from Hawaii Kai to parts of Ewa and Mililani can pick up registration forms at public libraries, post offices and satellite city halls on Oahu.

The form and instructions can also be downloaded from the Office of Elections website at hawaii.gov/elections by clicking on the button for wikiwiki voter registration.

Forms must be postmarked by tomorrow, the deadline set by law at 30 days before the election. The forms should be mailed to the City and County of Honolulu, 530 S. King St. Room 100, Honolulu, HI 96813-3077.

So far about 316,000 people are registered to vote in the special election. The major candidates to replace Abercrombie, who resigned to run for governor, are former U.S. Rep. Ed Case, City Councilman Charles Djou and state Senate President Colleen Hanabusa.

The election is being held by mail, and the state Office of Elections will be sending out ballots on April 30. The ballots must be returned and received by 6 p.m. May 22.

Those who have moved since the last election should re-register with their new address to receive a ballot.

There will be one location for walk-in voting: Honolulu Hale, beginning May 10.
