Honolulu scuba diver, separated from friends, dies at Straub Hospital
A 55-year-old Honolulu man died yesterday after getting separated from his scuba diving companions at Hanauma Bay.
The Honolulu Medical Examiner identified the diver as Thomas Selzer. An autopsy is scheduled today.
The man's companions went ashore at about 11:30 a.m. and informed lifeguards that the man had separated from them and was missing, said Bryan Cheplic, city Emergency Services Department spokesman.
The lifeguards found the man's equipment floating in the area known as Witch's Brew and found him on the bay floor. An ambulance took the man in critical condition to Straub Clinic & Hospital, where he died.
Lifeguards said ocean conditions were calm, with winds of 10 to 15 mph.
Officials suspend 4-day search for Utah man near Wailua Falls
Kauai County suspended the search yesterday for a Utah visitor missing since Thursday on a kayak tour of the Wailua River.
Culminating an intensive, four-day effort, separate teams searched the upper end of the valley and the area above Wailua Falls yesterday.
Ryan Soper, 26, a visitor from Orem, Utah, disappeared while on a tour near Secret Falls.
The search was conducted by rescue specialists from the Lihue fire station, state Department of Land and Natural Resources personnel and a canine search team.
“;If any new information is received regarding the missing man that warrants an active search, we will certainly assist DLNR once again,”; Kauai Fire Chief Robert Westerman said in a statement.
Police look for 25-year-old man who allegedly stabbed his brother
Honolulu police were looking for a man who allegedly slashed and stabbed his older brother after a fight in Waianae early Saturday morning.
Police responded to a call at a store on Farrington Highway at 1:10 a.m. after witnesses said an argument between the brothers escalated. The 25-year-old suspect allegedly stabbed his brother, 28, several times before fleeing. The victim was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Victim of fatal motorcycle crash on the Big Island is identified
The National Park Service identified the victim of a motorcycle crash on Highway 11 as Robert D. Schommer, a 47-year-old Big Island resident.
Rangers at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the Big Island Fire Department and police responded to the scene in the park grounds near mile marker 32 at 10:30 p.m. Friday. Visitors driving by called 911 after seeing someone lying on the side of the road.
Schommer was found dead about 50 feet from his motorcycle. He was wearing a helmet and appeared to have been traveling toward Hilo.
30-year-old man is arrested in alleged road rage incident
Police arrested a 30-year-old man Thursday for allegedly punching and breaking another driver's car window while they were stopped at a red light in Waianae—an apparent case of road rage.
The suspect reportedly took issue with the driving of a 19-year-old in another car on Farrington Highway.
He was arrested on suspicion of first-degree unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle and fourth-degree criminal property damage, a petty misdemeanor.
