Ioane carries Punahou over Mid-Pacific
POSTED: Sunday, April 18, 2010
Trailing by a run in the bottom of the seventh inning, Jasmine Ioane stepped up to the plate and blasted a two-run homer over the right-field fence to lift host Punahou to a 2-1 win over Mid-Pacific yesterday in Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls softball action.
In addition, Ioane pitched a dazzling game in limiting Mid-Pacific to four hits as she won the pitching duel against counterpart Keiki Carlos in a performance that she says she will always remember.
“;I'm thrilled about this win,”; said Ioane. “;This game will go down in my history book as one of my best games ever. This is the first time I've ever won a game with a home run.”;
Both Ioane and Carlos pitched complete games as they consistently kept hitters off the bases and stopped potential scoring rallies.
Carlos held Punahou to three hits, but the big blast by Ioane spoiled her otherwise excellent effort on the mound. After surviving the sixth inning when Punahou had runners on second and third, Keiki got off to rough start in the seventh.
Kayla Shimoda led off and narrowly beat the throw to first base for an infield single. Next up was Ioane. The senior masterfully waited for the right pitch and walloped the sixth one she saw.
After the homer cleared the fence, the Punahou bench erupted with a wild celebration at home plate as the team congratulated both Shimoda and Ioane.
“;When I went up to the plate, I was just trying to make solid contact, and hopefully get a hit that would move the runner to the next base. I had no idea I was going to hit a home run. Keiki is a very good pitcher. So I waited for the right pitch and thankfully I hit it hard enough to clear the fence,”; Ioane said.
Shimoda says she really wanted to win this game in honor of the team's five seniors. The game was the last home outing for Punahou (8-4 ILH).
“;Our seniors played a great game and they deserved it. They worked hard all season long,”; Shimoda said.
“;So when I was at the plate (in the seventh inning) I knew we still had a chance to win. I knew we were down by one, so I thought to myself that I had to get on base. When Jasmine made contact I wasn't sure if it was going over. When I saw it go over the fence I was so happy for Jasmine. She a great leader,”; Shimoda said.
