Quarterback Club honors Robbs, Tanibe

In lieu of its annual banquet of champions, the Honolulu Quarterback Club instead will begin honoring this year's 13 award winners at tomorrow's luncheon at the Maple Garden Restaurant.

Broadcaster Don Robbs will receive the Les Keiter Award for media excellence and official Pat Tanibe the Earl Galdeira Career Official's Award.

Robbs, one of the original “;Poi Boys”; on K-POI in the 1960s, is in his 34th season as radio broadcaster for Hawaii baseball. Tanibe has officiated basketball games for more than five decades and serves as the assigner for PacWest officials.

Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m., with the program to follow at noon. The event is open to the public.

 

Wahine shut out Spartans in tennis

Hawaii concluded its Western Athletic Conference season in women's tennis with a 7-0 victory over San Jose State yesterday at the UH Tennis Complex.

The Rainbow Wahine (10-13, 5-3 WAC) are guaranteed at least a No. 4 seed when they go to Fresno, Calif., for the WAC tournament that begins April 29. The Spartans dropped to 11-13 and 0-6.

The 42nd-ranked Rainbow Warriors (9-7, 3-1) rebounded from Thursday's upset loss to New Mexico State by winning the doubles point and three of the four completed singles matches. The lone loss came at No. 1 singles, where No. 40 James Meredith topped Hawaii's Denis Lajola, ranked 110, 6-1, 6-4.

The Warriors, the defending WAC champions, will be seeded no lower than second when the WAC tournament starts April 30 at Fresno, Calif.

 

No. 5 Hawaii water polo beats No. 6 San Jose State

Carmen Eggens scored four goals and No. 5 Hawaii finished the regular season with a 6-5 win over No. 6 San Jose State in last night's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo match at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

Eggens scored the winning goal with less than 3 minutes remaining. Goalie Serena Bredin had 12 saves for the Rainbow Wahine (16-6, 4-3 MPSF). The Spartans dropped to 16-11 and 2-4.

 

Warriors golfers sitting in last place on the road

The Hawaii men's golf team was in last place heading into today's final round of the Western Intercollegiate at the Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz, Calif.

The Warriors were at 761 after two rounds in the 12-team tournament, 69 strokes behind leader No. 4 Oregon.

Seasiders repeat in PacWest tennis

Led by junior Elwen Li, the second-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii tennis team successfully defended its Hawaiian Airlines PacWest women's championship by shutting out Hawaii Pacific 5-0 yesterday at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale, Ariz.

Li, ranked No. 1 nationally by the ITA, finished the tournament undefeated in both doubles and singles, and was named the most valuable player.

Chaminade defeated Dixie State 5-1 for third place. Silversword senior Tiffany DeVincent earned the sportsmanship award.

Academy of Art finished fifth with a 5-4 win over Grand Canyon, while Hawaii-Hilo shut out Dominican 5-0 for seventh.

 

HPU clinches share of title

Toby Inouye scattered five hits in a complete-game effort and Tyler Davis' RBI triple highlighted a four-run second as Hawaii Pacific topped Grand Canyon 6-2 in the first game of a PacWest doubleheader in Phoenix.

The victory clinched a share of the league championship for the Sea Warriors - their first conference title in the sport - but dropped the nightcap 7-4. HPU improved to 28-10 overall, 20-4 PWC, while the Antelopes dropped to 26-20 and 16-12.

 

UH-Hilo, HPU split in softball

Sarah Weisskopf's RBI single to center in the bottom of the fifth broke a 3-3 tie and Hawaii-Hilo rallied from a 3-0 deficit to edge Hawaii Pacific 4-3 in the second game of a PacWest softball doubleheader yesterday at the UHH field.

Sherise Musquiz (22-1) tossed a four-hitter and Casey Sugihara and Kozy Toriano drove in runs as the Sea Warriors took the opener 2-0.

HPU (36-5, 21-3 PWC) and UH-Hilo (30-13, 18-8) conclude their series with a doubleheader today beginning at noon.
