Motorcyclist dies in Volcanoes park

Park rangers are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, according to the Big Island Fire Department.

Officials said an unidentified man, about 40 to 50 years old, was found dead on the highway about 50 feet from his motorcycle at about 10:22 p.m. Friday. The victim was wearing a helmet and might have been heading toward Hilo on Highway 11.

Neighbor puts out fire with a garden hose

A neighbor with a garden hose put out a fire in Pepeekeo yesterday morning, the Big Island Fire Department said.

The fire was reported at 6:40 a.m. at 28-0483 Kalika Place. When firefighters arrived they found the flames already had been extinguished by a neighbor who also woke up residents and alerted them to the fire. Damage to the home is estimated at $30,000. The cause is under investigation.

Cardiac arrest kills Kuliouou Ridge hiker

The Honolulu Fire Department helicopter airlifted a hiker who went into cardiac arrest off the Kuliouou Ridge Trail yesterday afternoon, fire Capt. Debbie Eleneki said.

The man, a visitor in his 50s, was taken in critical condition to Straub Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, said Emergency Services Department spokesman Bryan Cheplic.

The man was hiking with his girlfriend and her parents when he collapsed, Eleneki said. His companions gave him cardiopulmonary resuscitation until rescue crews arrived. The Fire Department received the call for help at 1:54 p.m. and firefighters were able to reach the hikers by helicopter at 2:26 p.m., Eleneki said.

Search teams on Kauai continue hunt for man

The search for a man who has been missing since Thursday in Wailua Valley on Kauai continued yesterday until dusk.

The 26-year-old man, a visitor from Utah, disappeared while on a tour near Secret Falls. He appeared to be acting erratically and ran into the forest, according to a Kauai County spokeswoman. Rescue specialists from the Lihue fire station, along with state Department of Land and Natural Resources personnel and a canine team, participated in the search.
