The Hawaii Foodbank believes it met its goal of raising $500,000 and collecting 500,000 pounds of food at its 21st annual food drive yesterday at shopping centers and other locations throughout the state, said the Hawaii Foodbank President Dick Grimm.
The drive has boosted the inventory of the foodbank, which has seen a steady drop in food donations and contributions, especially in the last two months.
“;I'm really concerned about next year,”; Grimm added.
The foodbank lowered its goals this year from $550,000 in contributions and 550,000 pounds of food last year.
The charity is continuing to accept monetary donations on its website, hawaiifoodbank.org.
The foodbank provides emergency food assistance to more than 183,500 residents annually, including 55,050 children and more than 11,000 seniors, according to its website. The foodbank network provides food and groceries to 416 food pantries, soup kitchens and emergency shelters.
