Bookmobile stalls out

High mileage, oil leaks and other problems have forced a halt to Hawaii Literacy's Bookmobile service to Leeward Oahu.

Hawaii Literacy received the Bookmobile in 2007, but the vehicle already had 200,000 miles on it and now the engine can't be repaired, a news release said. Hawaii Literacy would like to obtain a 21-passenger van, or a converted handi-shuttle or regular shuttle with less than 85,000 miles on it.

Or, the existing Bookmobile, a Ford E350, could be revived if someone can donate a new engine.

For information on how to donate toward a new bookmobile, visit http://apps.facebook.com/causes/456217.

Cash donations can be made at Hawaii Self Storage locations (Kaimuki, Salt Lake, Pearl City, Mililani and Kapolei).
