NMSU edges UH in tennis

Defending Western Athletic Conference champion Hawaii lost its first league match of the season yesterday, falling to New Mexico State 4-3 in Las Cruces, N.M.

It was the first loss to an unranked team this year for the No. 42 Rainbow Warriors (8-7, 2-1 WAC). The Aggies (11-6, 2-3) earned the deciding point at No. 3 singles when Arthur Surreux rallied past Leo Rosenberg 4-6, 6-4, 7-6, Rosenberg's first defeat in 15 dual matches.

 

BYUH gains split with Chaminade

Morgan Necaise drove in the game's lone run in the bottom of the third and Shiri Stevens scattered seven hits as Brigham Young-Hawaii edged Chaminade 1-0 in the second game of yesterday's PacWest softball doubleheader at the BYUH field.

The Silverswords (15-31, 11-15 PWC) won the opener 6-2. Brandi Sasaki drove in four runs, three on a homer to left-center in the second that put Chaminade up 5-0.

The Seasiders (3-29, 3-20) host the Silverswords in another doubleheader today beginning at 1 p.m.

 

Seasiders roll on at PacWest tennis

Brigham Young-Hawaii opened defense of its Pacific West Conference women's tennis tournament title yesterday with a 6-0 rout of Dominican at the Paseo Racquet Club in Phoenix.

The top-seeded Seasiders (26-0) won their three doubles matches 8-0 and will meet Dixie State in today's semifinal. The Red Storm edged Grand Canyon 5-4.

In other quarterfinal matches, second-seeded Hawaii Pacific advanced with a 5-0 victory over Academy of Art. The Sea Warriors (17-2) meet No. 3 seed Chaminade in today's other semifinal.

The Silverswords (10-9) eliminated Hawaii-Hilo 5-1 yesterday, winning three doubles matches and two of the three singles matches against the Vulcans.
