Prince and Ala Moana hotels offer anniversary specials

The Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki and Golf Club marks its 20th anniversary on April 20 with a “;Taste the Memories”; gala and savings for kamaaina staying at the hotel or playing on its golf course. “;We take tremendous pride in the 20 years of outstanding service and warm memories that the Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki has given to our visiting guests and kamaaina families”; said Donn Takahashi, president of Prince Resorts Hawaii. The gala, a benefit for Easter Seals Hawaii, will offer cuisine by chefs Gary Strehl, Eberhard “;Hardy”; Kintscher, Kamtan Tanchaleun, Masami Shimoyama and Alan Wong; Tickets are $150 each. Strehl, the hotel's first exec chef in 1990, and Wong are two of the founders of Hawaii regional cuisine. With the exception of Wong, well known for his award-winning restaurants, all of the chefs are members of the Prince Wakiki's inaugural culinary team. Strehl is now executive chef at L'Enfant Plaza Hotel in Washington, D.C. Kintscher is exec chef at Michel's, Tanchaleun is exec chef at the Waikiki Prince and Shimoyama is master chef at Hakone at the Waikiki Prince. The Manao Trio will entertain. The Ala Moana Hotel is celebrating its 40th anniversary by offering 40 rooms a night for 40 days at the low rate of $40 a night from April 22 through May 31. Each booking requires a three to five-night stay, all at $40. Bookings for the anniversary special start Thursday and are only available online at AlaMoanaHotel.com/40 ... The talented and versatile singer-instrumentalist Willie K. performs at the Ala Moana Hotel's Administrative Professionals Day luncheon April 21. Charlotte Pauly, wife of Kahala Hotel G.M. Thomas Pauly, was the cook for celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse and 15 other people Monday night at the Pauly home. Charlotte is Danish but was raised in Mexico. She cooked a Mexican meal and made Mexican chocolate ice cream for dessert. Emeril winds up two days at the Kahala Food and Wine Festival today ... San Francisco Slanted Door chef Charles Phan, who gave a cooking demonstration at the Halekulani last Saturday, took time out to give a cooking class at Kapiolani Community College during his stay ...

May 1 is Lei Day in Hawaii and it will be a big day for the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame as it will honor five individuals or groups who have played a significant role in perpetuating Hawaiian music in song and dance at a Royal Hawaiian Monarch Room brunch. Honorees are the late hula master Maiki Aiu Lake, Dennis Kamakahi, the late Kui Lee, the late Thomas Sylvester Kalama and the Hui Ohana, which was made up of brothers Nedward and Ledward Kaapana and the late Dennis Pavao. Performances will be by Kamakahi, Nedward Kaapana, the Maiki Aiu Lake Ohana, Nina Kealiiwahamana, Kenneth Makuakani and Kumu Hula O'Brien Eselu with Halau Ke Kai O Kahiki. Baseball fans will once again gather at the Alexander Cartwright gravesite at Oahu Cemetary next Saturday at 11 a.m. to pay tribute to the “;Father of Modern Baseball.”; Cartwright arrived in Honolulu in 1850 at the age of 30 and became one of the city's most prominent citizens.
