KS-Maui's Long commits to UH

Kamehameha-Maui junior Ginger Long, the Maui Interscholastic League player of the year in Division I volleyball, has given her oral commitment to play for Hawaii in 2011.

The 5-foot-11 Long hit .459 with 201 kills, 35 aces and 35 blocks for the Warriors. She is transitioning from middle blocker to outside hitter, her expected position with the Rainbow Wahine.

“;She's a legit D-I player,”; said Al Paschoal, her coach at Hawaiian Style Volleyball Club. “;Washington State came in hard on her, and she narrowed her choices to Washington State, UC Irvine, Pacific (Ore.) and Hawaii.

“;She touches 10 feet, can pass and play defense, and will be able to play in that quicker offense Hawaii likes to run. We're stoked to be able to see another Maui kid playing on TV.”;

Paschoal also coached former Warrior middle Dio Dante.

Long can sign a binding national letter of intent in November. The Wahine recruiting class of 2011 includes middle Jade Vorster from Timber Creek, Fla.; and California prep players Jane Croson, a hitter from Los Alamitos High, and setter Monica Stauber from Mater Dei High.

'Fastest Human' part of relays

Hawaii's Fastest Human, a 100-meter open sprint competition, again will be part of next week's Punahou Invitational Relays.

Registration opens at 4:20 p.m. Thursday with trials to follow, The finals begin at 1:10 p.m. Saturday.

HPU cheer, dance teams win titles

Hawaii Pacific won its eighth consecutive national title in the large coed division yesterday at the NCA Championships in Dayton Beach, Fla.

The Sea Warrior dance team all won yesterday, picking up its fifth straight title and placing first in the hip-hop category.

HPU's all-female and small co-ed teams placed third.
