The surreal has become real for Jade Vorster.
The 6-foot-4 junior from Timber Creek High in Orlando, Fla., made an unofficial visit to Hawaii last week. She left with a scholarship offer after her oral commitment to play volleyball for the Rainbow Wahine starting in 2011.
“;I was looking for a unique experience and Hawaii is definitely a unique experience,”; Vorster said in a phone call yesterday. “;It was my first visit and I was blown away by the scenery. The coaches and players were so inviting.
“;In the beginning, Hawaii was kind of a surreal idea. The schools closer to home seemed more attainable. But I realized that Hawaii could be a really good fit and, after my visit, I knew it would benefit me as a student and an athlete.”;
Vorster joins California preps Jane Croson, an outside hitter, and setter Monica Stauber as the core of the 2011 class. Molokai High junior Kalei Adolpho has orally committed to the Wahine basketball program, but is also hoping to play volleyball.
They can make their commitment official during the early signing period in November.
While Vorster did not want to discuss the other schools that had shown interest, her high school coach did.
“;I had been contacted by many big Division I schools, many ranked programs,”; Timber Creek coach Allan Rubenstein said. “;Hawaii was at the top of her list from the beginning.
“;There are a number of tall, strong, athletic players out there, but Jade brings something extra. She is one of the smartest players I've ever coached.”;
The honors student helped Timber Creek to a state title as a sophomore.
