Wahine crack Top 25 in softball

Hawaii broke into the NFCA/USA Today Division I Top 25 softball poll yesterday, its first appearance since 2008.

The Rainbow Wahine (28-11, 6-0 Western Athletic Conference), who had been receiving votes, made its debut at No. 25.

Also yesterday, Hawaii had its single game against Utah State canceled due to snow in Logan, Utah. The teams hope to get their regularly scheduled WAC doubleheader in today; a helicopter was scheduled to hover above the field this morning in attempt to dry the playing surface.

The Wahine continue their road trip, traveling to Boise State for the first time for a single game Friday and a doubleheader Saturday.

WAC tennis honor for Lajola

Hawaii junior Dennis Lajola was named the Western Athletic Conference male tennis player of the week yesterday.

Lajola won his singles and doubles matches to help the Warriors defeat No. 28 Fresno State last week. He also ran his WAC singles record to 3-0 by winning his singles match against Idaho, a contest that was halted due to rain.

HPU tennis teams earn victories

Hawaii Pacific had no problem with Rose-Hulman (Ind.) yesterday, winning both the men's and women's tennis matches at Central Oahu Regional Park.

The fifth-ranked Sea Warriors men's team improved to 19-3 with an 8-1 win over the Engineers, losing only at No. 6 singles. HPU moves on to the NCAA West Regional later this month.

The Lady Sea Warriors (16-2) shut out the visitors 9-0. HPU next competes at the PacWest Championships in Phoenix, April 15-17.
