Woman dies after running her motorcycle into a truck

A 34-year-old Kailua woman died Saturday after her motorcycle struck a parked pickup truck in Enchanted Lake.

Police said the woman was speeding north on Wanaao Road south of the Paopua Loop intersection when the motorcycle veered into the truck.

The crash happened at about 7:55 p.m. under rainy skies.

An ambulance took the woman, who was in critical condition, to the Queen's Medical Center where she died.

She was not wearing a helmet, police said.

Her death is the 19th traffic fatality on Oahu this year compared with 18 at the same time last year.

 

Fishing boat overturns; man apparently drowns

A Kaneohe man apparently drowned while fishing after midnight yesterday in Kaneohe Bay, police said.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office identified the man as Henry Hoapili Jr., 46. An autopsy will be performed today.

Hoapili was fishing with two friends when their boat capsized at 12:03 a.m., police said. Hoapili's friends swam back to shore with him, then called for help, police said.

Police opened an unattended-death case.

 

Struggle with police leads to arrest at Waikiki hotel

A 45-year-old man was arrested Saturday after allegedly trying to grab two officers' guns during a struggle at a Waikiki hotel.

The man was seen in a room at the Maile Sky Court, rummaging through the guest's belongings as the guest napped with the door ajar at about 8 a.m., police said.

When the guest's son woke him, the man fled with about $500 in Japanese yen, police said.

The guest reported the incident to hotel security and spotted the man in the lobby. Security detained the man until police arrived.

Officers tried to arrest the man, but he tried to flee and struggled with the officers, police said.

During the struggle, he tried to take the weapons out of the holsters of two officers, police said.

The man, who has no local address, was booked on suspicion of first-degree burglary, attempted theft, resisting arrest, drug charges, failing to comply with sex offender registration requirements and a warrant.

 

Man charged in attempt to throw woman from lanai

A 23-year-old man who police say tried to throw his girlfriend from the lanai of their Waikiki apartment Friday night has been charged with attempted second-degree murder.

Bryan Roudebush was being held yesterday on $100,000 bail and a $500 warrant.

Police said Roudebush beat his 25-year-old girlfriend at their Canal House apartment on Ala Wai Boulevard, then tried to throw her off the lanai.

The woman escaped and had a neighbor call police at about 10:15 p.m. She was treated at a hospital for injuries.

 

Boater helps in rescue of kayaker off Big Island

A private boater helped Big Island firefighters rescue a kayaker who was hanging on to his overturned vessel about 75 yards from shore at Alahaka Bay yesterday.

Firefighters responded to Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historic Park at about 2 p.m. and asked the boater to help.

The kayaker was brought back to Honaunau boat ramp by the boater and declined medical attention.
