Kitaoka, Mililani shut down Leilehua
POSTED: Sunday, April 04, 2010
Micah Kitaoka picked a fine time to pitch his best game of the season.
The junior right-hander went five innings for Mililani, permitting only an unearned run in a 6-1 win over Leilehua yesterday at the Trojans' field.
Wade Taoka pitched two scoreless innings to close out the win for the Trojans, who improved to 4-3 and regained some momentum for the stretch run in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West.
“;He didn't have his best stuff, but we got some double plays. We just want to put the ball in play, make plays on defense and keep it simple,”; Mililani coach Mark Hirayama said. “;We just came off a three-game skid. Now we've got a big game against Leilehua on Monday, then Aiea on Wednesday and Saturday. We can't look past anyone. Leilehua's battled back before.”;
Kitaoka counted on his fastball to get ahead. He scattered six hits while striking out one and walking none.
“;I don't get a lot of strikeouts. I rely on my defense,”; Kitaoka said, noting that catcher Kacey Miyasato makes the calls. “;He has confidence in me. He calls a lot of fastballs.”;
The Mules learned soon enough that Kitaoka wouldn't settle for many three-ball counts.
“;Young pitchers don't realize your best pitch is going to be the fastball,”; Hirayama said. “;We just try to get ahead with the fastball.”;
Four errors by Leilehua led to four unearned runs by the Trojans.
“;No excuses, it's a lack of execution. They made the plays when they needed plays,”; Mules coach Lane Watanuki said. “;If we can execute defensively, we'll be OK.”;
The teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader at Leilehua's home field, Fred Wright Park, but a soggy field forced a site change. Tomorrow's rematch will be at Fred Wright Park.
A playoff spot is still in reach for the Mules, who are now 3-6.
“;We need to move runners (on base) and execute,”; Watanuki said. “;These kids are young. We (the coaches) can't play for them. It's their time in the sun.”;
