Tow-in event is canceled
The waiting period for the North Shore Tow-in Championship ended and the event will not be held this year.
Alec Cooke, the big-wave surfing event's contest director, said, “;We considered extending the waiting period, but there are no swells in sight.”;
For the next winter surf season, the plan is to start the North Shore Tow-in Championship waiting period in early December, according to Cooke.
QB Club welcomes Brown, Wong
University of Hawaii head diving coach Mike Brown and UH women's volleyball associate head coach Scott Wong are the guest speakers at tomorrow's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.
Brown is in his 10th year and was recently selected as WAC diving coach of the year for the sixth time.
A volunteer assistant at UH in 2006, Wong recently rejoined the Rainbow Wahine after serving as associate head coach at the University of San Francisco.
The club's luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Maple Garden. The public is invited.
Hawaii downs Fresno State
Hawaii defeated Fresno State 5-2 in men's tennis yesterday at the UH Tennis Complex.
Dennis Lajola and Andreas Weber led the way for the Rainbow Warriors (8-6, 2-0 Western Athletic Conference) with wins in doubles and singles.
The Bulldogs dropped to 13-8 and 3-1.

Alyssa Nafarrete defeated Anna Mikhaylova 6-2 and 6-3 for Hawaii's only win.
The Bulldogs improved to 4-14 overall and 1-0 in the WAC, and the Rainbow Wahine dropped to 4-14 and 1-2.
Rainbow Wahine sweep in softball
Hawaii swept a softball doubleheader—9-8 and 14-3—from New Mexico State yesterday at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
The Rainbow Wahine hit four home runs in each game and got complete-game wins by Stephanie Ricketts and Kaia Parnaby.
Katie Grimes, Jessica Iwata, Jenna Rodriguez and Kelly Majam hit the homers in the opener.
Grimes connected for two homers in the second game, while Traci Yoshikawa and Amanda Tauali'i also hit round-trippers.
3 Hawaii surfers advance at Bells
Three Hawaii surfers won their first-round heats today at the Rip Curl Pro Bells at Bells Beach in Australia.
With the wins in 2- to 4-foot surf, Dusty Payne, Fred Patacchia and Roy Powers advanced to the third round of the Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour event.

Finalists picked for UHH post
Three finalists have been picked for Hawaii-Hilo's women's basketball coach position, according to UHH athletic director Dexter Irvin.
The finalists are Daphne Honma, Dave Kaneshiro and Pamela Bowden.
Honma is the interim head coach of the Vulcans and has gone 39-61 over the last four seasons.
Kaneshiro has been an assistant for the UHH men's team since 2006.
Bowden is a former assistant coach at Texas A&M International University.
Honma was the interim coach because the official position with contract was not established by the University of Hawaii system until recently.
