The University of Hawaii at Manoa's Lyon Arboretum received a $200,000 gift from Susan Chamberlin and her husband Steve Chamberlin. The money is going to an endowment fund named after Susan's father, former Hawaiian Sugar Planters' Association head Robert L. Cushing.
The endowment fund was established in 1999 with a $100,000 donation from Cushing.

The Oncology Patient Navigation Program at The Queen's Medical Center received the American Cancer Society's 2009 Harold P. Freeman Service Award for saving lives and diminishing suffering in cancer patients in under-served, at-risk communities. The Queen's program targets the Hawaiian and Filipino populations, which have the highest incidence of cancer death in Hawaii.

Seagull Schools received $16,000 from Hawaiian Electric Co. for five monkey pod and four shower trees to provide natural shade and cooling for classrooms, thereby cutting down on the use of energy for air conditioning.
