Nature untouched
POSTED: Friday, April 02, 2010
Johnny Knapp came to the medium of photography in a most unusual way - he tried it as a distraction from New York winters.
As Knapp says in his artist's bio: “;Carrying around a camera was a way to get my mind off the cold and get psyched on what was around me.”;
It wasn't long before his “;usual sidekick”; had him looking at his surroundings with new eyes.
Tonight, Knapp's images are on exhibit far from the cold at Chinatown Boardroom, where his solo show, “;Stolen Moments,”; runs through April 29.

Knapp said the works are images of beauty, “;a range from the mundane to the most unusual.”; His aim in this collection was to capture nature untouched, or to create a “;subtle juxtaposition”; between nature and man. The intent was to evoke an organic emotional response, rather than one that's overstated or forced, from the audience.
Ironically, much of “;Stolen Moments”; are water shots. It's an environment Knapp's actually quite familiar with, having grown up in Brookhaven, a quiet hamlet where he was surrounded by fields, bays and beaches - lots of nature.
“;I view what's outside as the greatest show on earth,”; he said.
Chinatown Boardroom is located at 1160 Nuuanu Ave. Call 585-7200.
