McCully blaze set deliberately
Fire investigators found that an early morning fire that heavily damaged a vacant McCully commercial building was intentionally set.
The case was referred to police.
Thirty-five firefighters responded yesterday to the 3:30 a.m. fire that damaged the interior of the one-story concrete building at 1713 Kalakaua Ave.
The fire was reported under control at 3:43 a.m. and put out around 4:15 a.m. Damage was estimated at $60,000. There were no injuries.
Fire companies first on the scene saw flames in the front of the structure and heavy smoke in the back. The fire was well developed when firefighters arrived, but spraying a foam solution helped to absorb the heat and smoke quickly.
Woman, 91, hurt in run-in at care home, dies of injury
A 91-year-old woman died March 23 from complications of a leg wound she sustained after being assaulted, the city Medical Examiner's Office said.
The police homicide detail is investigating the case, which had been classified as an unattended death.
The woman was identified as Agnes Zamora of Ewa Beach.
Police said Zamora was involved in an altercation with another patient at a care home in Waianae.
She was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was treated and released, then placed in another care home.
She died March 23 and was pronounced dead at the care home and taken to the morgue, police said.
Police release 3 suspects in shooting in Wahiawa
Three attempted-murder suspects arrested Tuesday after a shootout in Wahiawa were released yesterday, police spokeswoman Michelle Yu said.
Yu did not explain why they were released.
The three men, ages 38, 31 and 23, had been arrested in an attempted home invasion robbery.
Two of suspects injured in the shooting remained hospitalized yesterday.
Police said the 23-year-old and the 38-year-old, who were masked, armed with handguns and carrying plastic ties, arrived at the Kilea Place house and told two women and a man to shut themselves inside. They told another man, 28, to stay outside. That man tried to disarm the two suspects, but he was shot when a gun went off.
When one suspect pointed a gun at a 26-year-old woman, she opened fire at the two men, who returned fire. Witnesses say about a dozen shots were fired.
Ex-officer pleads not guilty to 25 charges
WAILUKU » A former Maui police officer has pleaded not guilty to 25 charges, including tampering with evidence and drug possession.
Allison Moore entered the pleas Tuesday before Circuit Judge Richard Bissen.
The 28-year-old Moore is free on $150,000 bail after being arrested on a warrant in Albuquerque, N.M.
Prosecutors say the alleged crimes were committed in 2006, 2008 and 2009, while Moore was with the Maui Police Department. She joined the department in 2004 and resigned in September.
Bissen granted conditions of bail requested by Moore's attorney, Robert Rivera. One of the conditions allows her to reside on Oahu with her mother.
Trial is set for June 7.
