Vulcans baseball sweeps on road
Keoni Manago's grand slam in the seventh inning helped Hawaii-Hilo defeat Academy of Art 13-4 in the first game of a conference baseball doubleheader yesterday in Moraga, Calif.
The Vulcans (11-19, 7-13) scored in every inning except the seventh in completing the sweep with a 10-3 victory in the second game. Manago again came up big, going 4-for-5 and driving in three runs against the Urban Knights (2-28, 2-18).
Sea Warriors take 2 from Knights
The third-ranked Hawaii Pacific softball team took both ends of yesterday's conference doubleheader, topping Academy of Art 13-2 in five innings and 10-7 in San Mateo, Calif..
Sherise Musquiz (20-1), named the PacWest pitcher of the week yesterday, scattered six hits, holding AAU scoreless over the final four innings of the opener. Musquiz helped her own cause with a two-run double in the first that helped give the Sea Warriors—the designated home team—the lead for good at 4-2.
Maile Kim drove in four runs and Chante Tesoro added a solo homer in the second game for HPU (33-4, 20-2), which completed a 10-day road trip with a 16-3 record.
The Urban Knights dropped to 18-16-1 and 8-8.
Musquiz picked up the weekly honor after going 6-0 with a save last week. She struck out 20 over 40 innings, had an 0.52 ERA and was named to the Mizuno Tournament of Champions all-tournament team.
BYUH men lose, tennis women win
The Brigham Young-Hawaii women's tennis team remained undefeated, improving to 21-0 with a 7-2 win over host Columbus (Ga.) State. Ayako Ikeda survived her No. 3 singles match, winning 7-5, 7-5.
The Seasiders men (13-3) lost to Columbus State 6-3. Senior Dillon Porter was part of two victories, winning at No. 2 singles and teaming with Rong Ma for a 9-7 win at No. 1 doubles.
