Kaufman earns WAC track honor

Hawaii high jumper Amber Kaufman was named the field athlete of the week in Western Athletic Conference outdoor women's track and field.

It was the sixth weekly honor for Kaufman, a junior from San Jose, Calif., who won her event at last week's Stanford Invitational. Her mark of 6-feet, 3.25 inches is tops in the country, and is first in the WAC by more than seven inches.

Wahine golfers tie for eighth

The Hawaii women's golf team finished tied for eighth with Oregon at the Anteater Invitational that concluded yesterday at the Dove Canyon (Calif.) Country Club.

The Rainbow Wahine finished at 939 after yesterday's 310, 40 strokes behind winner San Diego State in the 15-team tournament. Sophomore Erika Lundberg led Hawaii at 231 after shooting 76 yesterday, 17 strokes off the pace of medalist Kayla Mortellaro of Idaho.

UH freshman Ka'ili Britos tied for 28th at 234.

McCutcheon wins volunteer award

Kaneohe resident Brian McCutcheon was named the volunteer coach of the year by the U.S. Olympic Committee last week for his help with the national taekwondo team.

McCutcheon owns the Oahu Taekwondo Center in Aiea and has developed and trained athletes since 1996.

Vulcans take 2 in baseball

Hawaii-Hilo rocked Academy of Art pitchers for a combined 31 hits to sweep a conference baseball doubleheader yesterday, 15-14 and 11-1 in San Pablo, Calif.

Keoni Manago, the reigning PacWest player of the year, was 7-for-10 with seven RBIs on the day, including driving in six runs in the slugfest opener.

UHH (9-19, 5-13) got a four-hitter from freshman Chris Pascual in the second game against AAU (2-25, 2-15).

No. 3 HPU splits softball twin bill

No. 3 Hawaii Pacific finished its 17-game road trip with a split of a conference softball doubleheader against Academy of Art, defeating the Urban Knights 5-1, then falling 3-1 in San Mateo, Calif.

Maile Kim hit a three-run homer and Nicole Morrow added a two-run shot for the Sea Warriors (31-4, 17-2) in the opener.

In the second game, Nicole Smith's three-run double in the fifth was the difference for the Urban Knights (18-14-1, 8-6).

» At Belmont, Calif., the conference doubleheader between Brigham Young-Hawaii and Dominican was rained out and won't be made up.

» At Rohnert Park, Calif., Sonoma State swept its nonconference doubleheader against Chaminade 11-1 and 7-1.

The Silverswords (14-26) were no-hit in the five-inning opener, scoring their lone run on two consecutive errors by the Seawolves. In the second game, Melissa Harris doubled to open the seventh and scored on Kori Berinobis' single.

Seasiders keep rolling in tennis

The Brigham Young-Hawaii women's tennis team ran its record to 20-0, shutting out Tuskegee 9-0 in Montgomery, Ala.

The Seasiders dropped a combined nine games in winning two doubles and five singles matches. Tuskegee defaulted two singles and one doubles match.
