Hawaii ruins Fullerton's sweep attempt
POSTED: Monday, March 29, 2010
Hawaii will play San Diego today with a chance at a winning road trip.
Collin Bennett went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs, and seven of Hawaii's 14 hits went for extra bases in a 10-7 win over Cal State Fullerton yesterday at Goodwin Field in Fullerton, Calif.
Kolten Wong and Kevin Macdonald had two doubles apiece and Hawaii's two through six hitters in the order went a combined 13-for-24 to help the Rainbows (13-11) salvage a game against the Titans (12-11).
“;We won that out of toughness,”; Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said. “;We're 2-2 on our road trip against two very good teams and we've got a chance (today) to get a winning trip.”;
Hawaii opened the trip with a win at Long Beach State on Wednesday. The Dirtbags then went on the road and took two of three against No. 17 Oregon State, which won three of four against the Rainbows to start the season.
After dropping the first two games against Fullerton, Hawaii responded early yesterday with five runs in the second inning.
Bennett started things with a single and Macdonald followed with the first of his two doubles for the day.
Fullerton starter Tyler Pill got the next two outs, but things quickly unraveled, as Pi'ikea Kitamura singled in Macdonald.
Matt Roquemore worked a walk and Greg Garcia ripped a two-run single up the middle, ending Pill's day after 1 2/3 innings.
Fullerton slowly chipped away against Hawaii starter Matt Sisto, scoring runs in three straight innings to pull within a run.
Austin Kingsolver's two-out RBI single in the fourth cut the lead to 5-4, but UH answered with four runs in the fifth.
Wong sandwiched a single between doubles by Garcia and David Freitas, and Bennett came through with a two-run double to left-center to put the 'Bows up 8-4.
“;Garcia and Wong in particular swung really well,”; Trapasso said. “;Collin (Bennett) kind of broke out of his minislump and that was big because we had to keep scoring.
“;(Fullerton) is a great offensive club and they are just now hitting their stride.”;
Sisto (3-3) allowed six runs on 12 hits in 5 1/3 innings and Alex Capaul and Lenny Linsky combined to allow one run over the final 3 2/3 innings.
The Titans pulled to 10-7 in the seventh on an RBI single by Billy Marcoe off Linsky, who had replaced Capaul one batter earlier.
Linsky shut the door on the Titans from then on to earn his fifth save.
“;Until we get (Nate) Klein back and we're back up to full strength, we're going to have more games like that, where if it's the seventh inning and we have a lead, I'm going to have to bring (Linsky) in,”; Trapasso said.
Trapasso said Zach Gallagher (1-1), who threw six innings of one-run ball in a win over Long Beach State on Wednesday, will start today's game at San Diego that begins at noon.
