Vulcan baseball loses shootout

A six-run first inning wasn't enough for UH-Hilo, as the Vulcans lost 20-12 to Grand Canyon yesterday in Phoenix.

The Vulcans (7-19) belted 18 hits, led by Shane Kessel's 3-for-6 outing, including three RBI. Grand Canyon (21-17) used two eight-run innings to record the come-from-behind win, led by Tyler Bair and Danny Bethea, who combined for eight of the team's 23 hits.

Casey Koizumi (0-2) took the loss after giving up five runs in two-thirds of an inning.

The Vulcans travel to San Francisco for a pair of doubleheaders against Academy of Art, starting tomorrow.

Kaufman wins high jump title

Hawaii high jumper Amber Kaufman won her event at the Stanford (Calif.) Invitational on Saturday, just missing out on breaking her own school record

Kaufman, who finished second at the recent NCAA indoor championships, easily cleared 6 feet, 3.25 inches to win. She brushed off the bar at 6-4.25, which would have set a UH mark.

In the javelin, Lauren Cutler finished second to former Wahine Kai Schmidt in the javelin. Schmidt, competing for Concordia, threw 147-4; Cutler was second at 134-9.

TeRina Kennan was third in the discus with a throw of 165-4. Michigan's Emily Pendleton won the event with a 173-9.
