After watching Kelly Majam launch a shot over the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium scoreboard in right field, Hawaii pitcher Stephanie Ricketts decided to give the freshman a little playful ribbing in the dugout.

“;I told her, 'Kelly you can do better than that,' “; Ricketts said.

Sure enough, in her next plate appearance, Majam uncoiled all of her 5 feet, 3 inches to send a blast well past the first to continue her remarkable power display in Hawaii's sweep yesterday of San Jose State.

Majam had four hits in the doubleheader, three of them leaving the ballpark, in Hawaii's 7-3 and 7-1 wins as the Wahine opened the Western Athletic Conference season with a series sweep over the Spartans.

Majam was 1-for-8 in the series before hitting homers in three of her next four plate appearances. She accounted for UH's final two runs of the first game with a homer into the UH Tennis Complex. She then plated the first three runs in the finale, drilling a solo homer in the third and a two-run blast in the fifth against a brisk breeze.

“;Hitting them over the scoreboard was kinda cool. I've never done that,”; Majam said with a giggle after raising her homer total to 18, the third-highest single-season total in school history, and three short of Kate Robinson's record set in 2008.

After going 16-5 over a month-long homestand, the Wahine (25-11, 3-0 WAC) embark on a nine-game conference road trip, starting at New Mexico State on Saturday. The trip includes high-altitude stops at Utah State and Boise State before they return home.

“;This is huge,”; UH head coach Bob Coolen said. “;We have four series on the road and three at home, so we have to take care of business at home. We're down to six games at home, that's it.”;

Majam, UH's leadoff hitter, went 3-for-4 with four RBIs in the second game, while fellow freshman Jessica Iwata followed by going 4-for-4 with a two-run double.

That was more than enough for Ricketts (11-6) to earn her second win of the series, scattering six hits in coming within one out of a shutout.

The SJSU pitching staff stayed away from Majam's power on Friday and early in yesterday's first game. After conferring with Coolen, Majam adjusted by moving closer to the plate and unloaded when the Spartans tried to sneak it past her inside.

“;It took me a little while to get into it again, but once I relaxed and focused on just getting hits, they started coming,”; Majam said.

“;For a freshman she's one of the most gifted athletes I've had in a long time,”; Coolen said. “;She has incredible bat speed, arm strength, legs, you name it. ... She's just a physical specimen when you see her in the weight room. She gets a lot out of her 5-foot-3 frame.”;

The Wahine clinched the series by twice coming from behind against the Spartans. After UH fell behind 2-0 in the second, Kanani Pu'u-Warren tied the game with a two-run opposite-field homer to right off of SJSU starter Jaclyn Imhof (7-5).

SJSU (23-12, 0-3) reclaimed a 3-2 lead in the fourth only to see UH move ahead for good in the bottom of the inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Katie Grimes hit a sharp grounder to short, which Morgan Otto bobbled. Her throw to second was late, allowing Brynne Buchanan to score as Alexandra Aguirre motored around third and beat the throw home with the go-ahead run.

Jenna Rodriguez added an RBI single in the fifth and Majam launched a two-run homer in the sixth to pad the lead.

Kaia Parnaby (13-5) gave up three doubles and a homer among SJSU's nine hits, but struck out seven and walked none in a complete-game win.
