Warriors swept away by the Waves

Good wasn't good enough last night for the No. 5 Hawaii men's volleyball team, not when playing the second-ranked team in the country.
Despite a match-high 20 kills from freshman opposite Jonas Umlauft, the Warriors saw their three-match win streak snapped after 1 hour and 47 minutes in Malibu, Calif. Junior hitter Cory Riecks put down 17 kills and the Waves remained tied atop the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation standings with a 30-26, 34-32, 30-26 victory at Firestone Fieldhouse.
It was the first time Hawaii (14-8, 10-7) had been swept since losing in straight sets at No. 1 Stanford on Jan. 16. Pepperdine (13-5, 11-4), finishing with a 13.5-7.5 edge in blocks, kept pace with Stanford, which swept UC San Diego last night.
Warriors coach Charlie Wade is looking for a better outing from his starting outside hitters in today's rematch (4 p.m. Hawaii time). Junior hitter Joshua Walker had 11 kills but hit .030, with three straight errors ending the match, and sophomore Steven Hunt had just two kills, hitting negative .222. Senior middle Matt Rawson was very effective when he got the ball, putting down 11 kills with two errors.
“;We served good, we passed OK, we didn't hit particularly well, and still lose by a total of 10 points,”; Wade said. “;Yes, this was a winnable match.
“;The difference is our hitters struggled and theirs were very efficient. Riecks and J.D. (Schleppenbach) were really good. (The Waves) have been sitting back for two weeks, waiting for us. They were well prepared.”;
Freshman opposite Maurice Torres had 14 kills and Schleppenbach added 13 for the Waves, who hadn't played since a five-set victory over UC Santa Barbara on March 13.
Pepperdine showed little rust in leading for most of Set 1. Hawaii rallied late, tying it at 22 on a kill by Walker.
In what would become the pattern the rest of the match, the Waves were stronger at the end. Pepperdine used a 4-0 run to pull away.
Hawaii rebounded in Set 2, again catching Pepperdine at 22. The Warriors used an ace and kills by Umlauft and Steven Grgas to jump ahead at 28-25.
The Waves tied it at 28 and then held off three Hawaii set points. Riecks had four straight kills, the last tying it at 32. Pepperdine took a 2-0 lead on a hitting error by Walker and a block of Rawson.
Hawaii again trailed early in Set 3, playing catch-up until knotting it at 18. It was tied seven more times, the last at 26 on Walker's 11th kill, but the Waves again got a 4-0 run to close it out.
