Surfers advance in Tasmania

Five Hawaii surfers were among the 24 to advance in the O'Neill Cold Water Classic at Marrawah, Tasmania.

Moving on out of their respective heats were former world champion Sunny Garcia, Sebastien Zietz, Granger Larsen, Casey Brown and Joel Centeio. Zietz won his heat yesterday with the high score of the day (16.93).

 

UH finishes 16th in men's golf

Sophomore T.J. Kua finished in 22nd and the Hawaii men's golf team placed 16th at the Barona Collegiate Cup that concluded yesterday in Lakeside, Calif.

Kua, tied for second after the first round at 68, came back from an 80 in the second round to card a 72 yesterday. The Warriors' mirrored Kua's performance, struggling in the second round but finishing at 397—1,180.

Sea Warriors go 2-1 in softball

The third-ranked Hawaii Pacific softball team went 2-1 to open pool play in the Mizuno Tournament of Champions yesterday in Turlock, Calif.

The Sea Warriors (26-2) shut out UC San Diego 2-0 and held off Cal State San Bernardino 3-2. HPU's loss came against Cal State Monterey Bay 5-4, a contest in which the Otters took a 5-0 lead, then hung on against the Sea Warriors.

Hawaii-Hilo also went 2-1 yesterday, with wins over Humboldt State 2-1 and Cal State Dominguez Hills 2-0. The Vulcans dropped the third game of the day, 3-1 to San Francisco State.

Chaminade was 0-2 yesterday.

» At San Francisco, Brigham Young-Hawaii dropped a conference doubleheader to Academy of Art 6-0 and 12-1.

April Jorgensen's first home run of the season gave the Seasiders (2-26, 2-18) their only run of the twin bill, coming in the bottom of the fifth against the Urban Knights (17-13, 7-5).

 

Vulcans gain baseball split

Hawaii-Hilo put together four singles and a sacrifice fly for a five-run fifth to defeat Grand Canyon 7-4 in the second game of a PacWest baseball doubleheader yesterday in Phoenix.

The Antelopes (19-16, 10-8) blanked the Vulcans (6-17, 2-12) in the opener 5-0.

 

HPU rolls in women's tennis

Zora Vickova did not drop a set at No. 1 singles to lead No. 12 Hawaii Pacific to an 8-1 win over Academy of Art yesterday at Central Oahu Regional Park.

The lone loss for the Sea Warriors (14-2) was in No. 5 singles, where Brittney Ynfante fell to Anna Ritchies 6-1, 6-3.

» Also at CORP, Hawaii-Hilo lost to UC San Diego in both men's and women's tennis. The Vulcan men lost 8-1, with Kevin Tamura topping Erik Elliott 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles for UHH's sole win.

The Vulcan women fell to the 17th-ranked Tritons 7-2.
