Film fest kicks off with coming-of-age tale

Waimea Valley kicks off its 2010 Family Friendly Film Series this weekend with a movie produced by Finola Dwyer.

“;Hana Surf Girls”; follows two young women on a journey to create adult lives for themselves while remaining true to their Valley Isle roots. The film series will continue on May 29 with “;Paniolo”; by Edgy Lee, followed by screenings of other movies on Aug. 14 and Nov. 20.

Show up early for dinner and take part in a special menu offered by Waimea Valley Grill, including tacos, beer battered fish, kalbi ribs, vegetarian chili, garden wraps, carnitas and pulled chicken verde. Prices start at $3 per item.

Best local slam poets compete for team

Monthly slam poetry event First Thursdays celebrates its 7th anniversary with a final round of competition to determine the 2010 HawaiiSlam Team.

The 12 best poets from the 2009-10 HawaiiSlam season will face off for just four slots on the crew that will represent Hawaii in Saint Paul, Minn., later this year. As a special bonus, National Poetry Slam champion Mike McGee will be on hand and local musician Genie will open the night with a set of “;scratch guitar.”;
