3 rescued after boat overturns in Maunalua

A good Samaritan rescued three people yesterday afternoon from an overturned boat in Maunalua Bay.

The Coast Guard launched a helicopter and the Coast Guard cutter Ahi shortly after the 2:15 p.m. call. They were on the scene shortly afterward.

Fire Capt. Terry Seelig said the vessel had drifted toward Wailupe Peninsula a couple hundred yards from its original location.

The Fire Department was working yesterday evening to either secure the boat in place or possibly bring it in from the reef to avoid further calls.

Suspect in beating and robbery arrested

Police arrested a 25-year-old man who allegedly beat another 25-year-old man repeatedly early yesterday morning until he handed over his wallet.

Police said the suspect approached the victim in Waikiki and demanded his wallet. When the victim refused and walked away, the suspect followed and demanded it again, police said.

When the victim again refused, the suspect allegedly punched him numerous times, causing the victim to fall. The suspect allegedly continued the beating as the victim lay on the ground, and the victim finally gave up his wallet.

The robbery occurred at 2:52 a.m. at an area fronting 2301 Kuhio Ave.

The suspect fled on foot, and two men, ages 25 and 24, followed him and called 911.

Police stopped the suspect nearby and arrested him on suspicion of second-degree robbery. Officers recovered the victim's money. The victim refused medical treatment, police said.
