Zach Gallagher is the latest in a suddenly long line of Hawaii starting pitchers getting the job done.

The junior right-hander tossed six innings of one-run ball and Collin Bennett hit a key two-out, two-run single to help Hawaii defeat Long Beach State 8-2 yesterday at Blair Field in Long Beach, Calif.

Gallagher (1-1) allowed six hits and struck out three with no walks as the Rainbows (12-9) won their opening road game of the season and extended their winning streak to a season-high five games.

“;That really was the kind of game we try to play,”; Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said. “;(We had) good, efficient pitching, good defense and timely hitting.

“;(Gallagher) threw 77 pitches in six innings and didn't walk anybody. He was ahead in the count. It was just what we needed.”;

Kevin Macdonald hit his team-leading fifth home run of the season, and Greg Garcia and Jeff Van Doornum both tripled and scored a run.

Hawaii held its opponent to two runs or fewer for the third time in four games.

Joey Terdoslavich and Matt Duffy had two hits and drove in a run apiece for the Dirtbags (9-10). Nate Underwood (1-1) allowed three runs on three hits in 4 2/3 innings to take the loss.

Long Beach State got on the board first on Terdoslavich's two-out RBI single in the third. But, as they did both times the Dirtbags scored, the Rainbows came up with an immediate answer.

Garcia led off the fourth with a triple to right-center and scored on a sacrifice fly by David Freitas.

Macdonald led off the fifth with his solo homer to left and Van Doornum followed with a triple. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Pi'ikea Kitamura and Hawaii took a 3-1 lead.

LBSU had no answer for Gallagher, who retired the final five batters he faced.

As soon as Gallagher was lifted for a reliever in the seventh, the Dirtbags went on the offensive. Steve Tinoco singled on the first pitch he saw from Blair Walters, who was unable to record more than an out. A sacrifice bunt by pinch hitter Jonathan Jones moved Tinoco into scoring position and Duffy brought him home with a single to cut the Rainbows' lead to 3-2.

Kirk Singer ended Walters' day with a single up the middle to put men on first and second.

Jesse Moore came in with the tying run in scoring position and immediately picked off Duffy at second before getting Kellen Hoime to fly out to right to preserve the lead.

“;We've had some success on that (pickoff) play,”; Trapasso said. “;It couldn't have come at a better time. That really took the wind out of their sails.”;

Hawaii then broke open the game with five runs in the final two innings.

The Rainbows took advantage of two walks and two hit batters in the eighth. Freitas walked in a run with two outs and Bennett ripped a two-run single to give UH a 6-2 lead.

Hawaii added two more in the ninth on a throwing error that allowed Kitamura to score and an RBI single by Garcia, who finished 2-for-4.

Moore worked the final 2 2/3 innings to pick up his second save of the season.

Hawaii continues its road trip with a three-game series at Cal State Fullerton beginning tomorrow at 4 p.m. Josh Slaats (2-0, 0.40) is expected to start for the Rainbows.
