Rainbow Wahine win in water polo

Sophomore Monika Eggens scored three goals and No. 5 Hawaii used a four-goal third quarter to defeat No. 14 San Diego State 9-6 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's water polo match yesterday in San Diego.

Goalie Serena Bredin had three saves for the Rainbow Wahine (10-6, 2-2 MPSF). The Aztecs dropped to 16-10 and 0-4.

Kobuch honored in WAC tennis

Hawaii senior Sophie Kobuch was named the Western Athletic Conference women's tennis player of the week yesterday.

Kobuch went 2-0 at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles to help the Rainbow Wahine (4-11) defeat Air Force and Lewis & Clark last week. In the victory over the Falcons, Kobuch teamed with Katarina Poljakova to rally from 6-2 down to win 8-6, clinching the doubles point for Hawaii.

NW Nazarene rolls past HPU

Hawaii Pacific pitchers gave up 27 hits — seven by Sean McDonald — in a 22-7 loss to Northwest Nazarene in yesterday's opener of a nonconference doubleheader at Nampa, Idaho.

McDonald set a Great Northwest Athletic Conference single-game record and the Crusaders (15-14) tied the GNAC mark for most hits.

HPU (22-7) salvaged a split with a 9-4 win in the nightcap, taking the lead for good at 4-2 on Blake Amaral's two-run homer in the fourth.

Sea Warriors sweep in softball

Ashley Valine ran her record to 10-0 as No. 3 Hawaii Pacific shut out Dominican 3-0 in the second game of yesterday's PacWest softball doubleheader at San Rafael, Calif.

The Sea Warriors (25-1, 17-1) won the opener 9-0 in five innings. Sherise Musquiz (14-1) tossed a two-hitter, with eight strikeouts, and Kozy Toriano had a two-run triple in the fourth against the Penguins (1-19, 1-13).

» At Belmont, Calif., Brigham Young-Hawaii split its conference twin bill with Notre Dame de Namur for the second straight day, rallying past the Argos 12-11 in the first game and falling 7-2 in the second.

The Seasiders (2-22, 2-13), the designated home team, scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh, with Shiri Stevens singling in Kaila Anderson with the winning run with one out. NDNU (8-20, 5-14) had scored 10 runs in the top of the seventh to take an 11-6 lead.

» At Turlock, Calif., Tessa Truong's two-run homer to left in the top of the fourth put Hawaii-Hilo ahead for good and the Vulcans gained a split of their nonconference doubleheader against Cal State Stanislaus with a 6-2 win in the second game.

Amber Waracka (12-3) scattered five hits, striking out eight, in the complete-game victory for the Vulcans (23-10).

In the opener, the Warriors (7-20-1) scored seven runs in their final two at-bats for a 10-3 victory. UHH had taken a 3-1 lead in the third, highlighted by Truong's solo homer to left.
