Word of Life will be missed

Word of Life Academy will shut down after the end of this school year, officials announced yesterday.

The high school, with fewer than 300 students, made its mark in athletics. A long list of football players, who suited up for Pac-Five and then for WOLA's own varsity team the past two seasons, made their way to the college level.

The girls volleyball team, coached by Lee Ann Satele, has long been a powerhouse, reaching the Division II state final each of the past two years.

With WOLA closing its doors, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu loses a participating team in boys basketball, football and girls volleyball. The league will not be affected in terms of state-tournament berths.

Chargers moving up

Pearl City moved up a notch to the No. 1 ranking in the Star-Bulletin Baseball Top 10 yesterday.

The Chargers are unbeaten in league play, using a deep pitching staff and strong defense. As usual, they're as disciplined as any team in the state.

“;The players work hard,”; coach Gary Nakamoto said.

The Chargers host Aiea today, then will play Na Alii again at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Hans L'Orange Park. The game will be televised by OC 16.
