Umlauft named co-player of week

Hawaii freshman opposite Jonas Umlauft was named co-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation player of the week yesterday after leading the Warriors to a two-match sweep of Long Beach State last weekend.

Umlauft averaged 5.11 kills, 1.67 digs and 0.89 blocks per set during the series. The German national also had four aces and hit .326. Umlauft had a team-high 18 kills in Friday's four-set win and followed that with a 28-kill effort in Saturday's five-set victory.

The freshman leads UH with a 4.85 kill average and has hit in double figures in all 21 matches, including seven 20-plus kill matches.

The Warriors stayed at No. 5 in the AVCA Coaches Division I-II Top 15 poll released yesterday.

It was the third consecutive week for the Warriors (10-6) at No. 5.

The top seven spots remained unchanged, led by Stanford, receiving 15 of the 16 first-place votes. Pepperdine, which hosts Hawaii for two matches this week, stayed at No. 2, receiving the remaining vote.

Cal State Northridge was third, with BYU fourth.

UH's Majam is hitter of week

Hawaii's Kelly Majam was named the WAC softball hitter of the week yesterday.

Majam, a freshman outfielder from Pine Valley, Calif., had eight hits with five home runs and one double last week en route to MVP honors at the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament.

Majam has 15 home runs this season, tied for fourth all-time at UH.

Dixie State sweeps UHH

Dixie State (Utah) swept Hawaii-Hilo in a baseball doubleheader yesterday at St. George, Utah.

Brett Adams went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Preston Grimes gave up six hits in six innings for the pitching win in a 4-1 victory for the Rebels in the first game.

Keoni Manago had two hits for the Vulcans in the opener.

Tony Nelson went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for Dixie State (16-9, 10-6 PacWest) in a 7-5 win in the second game.

Jeff Hanna had two hits and two RBIs for UH-Hilo (5-15, 1-11 PacWest) in the second game.

Ono fires ace in tournament

Hawaii-Hilo's Randi Ono aced the 143-yard 12th hole with a 6-iron during the first round of the InterWest Chico Invitational golf tournament yesterday at Chico, Calif.

The Vulcans are tied for sixth place in the 10-team event. Dayna Bersamin of UHH is in 10th place at 9-over 81.

Sonoma State leads the field at 318, followed by Cal State Monterey Bay at 326.

Academy of Art's CrystalFaith Superal leads the individual field at 2-over 74.

BYUH women top Cal State LA

Yuan Jia won at No. 1 singles and at No. 1 doubles with partner Elwen Li to lead Brigham Young-Hawaii to a 9-0 victory over Cal State Los Angeles yesterday in Laie.

Li, Ayako Ikeda, Shawni Porter, Jenny Chin and Salina Aranda also won in singles and doubles for the Seasiders (14-0), who are ranked No. 3 nationally in Division II.
