Daughter arrested in death of mother

Police arrested a 61-year-old Alewa Heights woman for allegedly stabbing her 88-year-old mother to death at her Nuuanu home yesterday morning.

Police responded to the stabbing at 7:49 a.m. at the victim's home, 114 Rosebank Place.

Homicide Lt. Bill Kato said the mother suffered multiple stab wounds to her torso. She was taken to the Queen's Medical Center, where she died.

The Department of the Medical Examiner has yet to release the identity of the victim. Neighbors identified her as Dorothy Y.K. Stribling. Property records show Stribling owned the home with her son, Sam Warner. Stribling's husband, Howard, died in May 2004.

Police said Warner called 911 and said the 61-year-old woman had stabbed Stribling.

Warner, 55, and his 15-year-old son lived with Stribling. Police said her grandson was not home at the time of the stabbing. Warner could not be reached for comment.

Police arrested the suspect at her mother's home on suspicion of murder.

Neighbor Alice Ige and her son, WillieDean, described Stribling as a friendly woman who used to breed boxers.

Ige said her daughter visited her mother about once a month, and described family members as quiet.

“;I just can't believe it happened,”; Ige said. “;You never expect it to happen in your neighborhood.”;

A woman who lives near the daughter in Alewa Heights said she noticed her recently “;walking a lot, not for exercise, but a contemplative walk.”;

Another neighbor of the suspect said he was “;very surprised”; to hear the news since the woman and her husband were “;very quiet”; people who have lived next door for at least the past 25 years.

“;I never heard any noise or any arguments,”; he said. “;They were nice. Just say hi. Not much conversation. She was a stay-at-home wife. He was a teacher.”;
