Be part of HBO tribute to troops

Home Box Office has partnered with the Battleship Missouri Memorial to give visitors a chance to record 30-second “;thank you”; videos as part of a national tribute to troops.

Memorial visitors can record the messages for free at on-site kiosks for a montage that will appear on HBO.com and be distributed through military and veterans organizations.

The effort is tied in with the airing of “;The Pacific,”; HBO's miniseries based on true stories of World War II.

Today the memorial is also offering free admission for children with the purchase of an adult Mighty Mo Pass.

The HBO Pacific Tribute Campaign kiosk will be at the memorial through May 31, Memorial Day.

        Two hundred tables of antique and modern firearms and custom knives are on display at the 66th semiannual gun show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall. Admission is $6.

       

 

       

 

 

Isle-based film now out on DVD

“;Chief,”; the first Hawaii-based short film to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, is being released this week on DVD.

The film tells the story of a highly ranked chieftain from Samoa who flees his village and ends up being a taxi driver in Honolulu.

At its 2008 premiere, “;Chief”; was hailed as “;one of the 10 must-see short films of Sundance.”;

It went on to win numerous awards at other festivals in Los Angeles, Nashville, Tenn., and Great Britain, and at the Hawaii International and Maui film festivals.

The DVD includes interviews with lead actor Chief Sielu Avea, writer and director Brett Wagner and producer Dana Satler Hankins, plus a featurette about the 16-day production on Oahu.

Museum has new director

; The Mission Houses Museum has a new executive director: Tom Woods, who has extensive experience in working with historical societies and museums in Hawaii.

Woods served as consultant to the Manoa Heritage Center and Hui o Laka on Kauai, as well as the Kona Historical Society, Kona Coffee Living History Farm, Kalukalu Homestead Ranch, Lyman House Museum, Paniolo Preservation Society and the Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaii on the Big Island.

Woods is originally from Minnesota and also had stints as supervisor of the Minnesota Historical Society and director of Old World Wisconsin.

He replaces David de la Torre, who resigned in August.

 

Cafe expands dining patio

The Contemporary Museum Cafe has expanded its patio area, thanks to a donation of materials from Bella Pietra, a natural-stone company. The 800-square-foot area of flagstone allows for larger parties to dine in the garden setting. In addition, the museum has added two new sculptures and repaired the cafe lanai and exterior walls.

» Photography students at Kamehameha Schools are showing their work at Canon Photo Gallery through March 30. The photos are distinctive in that all are from a film-based, wet darkroom program. Kameha- meha instructor Jan Becket says the school's photography program is one of the largest in the state.
