The Baldwin High School girls' softball team celebrated wins both on and off the field yesterday.

A day after a federal judge ruled the state and county had discriminated against the team by moving them to an inferior field, the team beat Lahainaluna 9-4 in a Maui Interscholastic League game.

“;The girls were very happy and pumped up after they heard the decision from the judge.”; said Susan Nobriga, a parent in the lawsuit. “;They just came out strong and with that decision, we wanted to end on a good note.”;

Three players, their parents, and the coach of the Baldwin High School girls softball team filed a federal lawsuit against the county and state for moving them to a field that they believe is inferior to the stadium where the boys play baseball.

U.S. District Judge David Ezra ruled on Friday that immediate remedies must be made either by returning the girls to their old field or improving the condition of the current field.

The county, which owns both fields, argued that the girls' old field is undergoing renovations and is not ready. Ezra ordered an expert to decide how soon the field can be repaired before the girls end their season in May.

Maui County attorneys argued that there was no discrimination because the boys' facility is also not in good shape and that in a full trial, the county will be able to prove it.

The two sides will continue working on the issue through mediation.

“;I'm kind of surprised that it happened so quick,”; said coach Joe Duran, adding that the lawsuit was a result of broken promises when the team was moved off its regular field at the beginning of the season.

Moving to the new field was like “;we were orphan children sitting on the backfield,”; he said.

One of the plaintiffs, Trisha Nobriga, 17, a senior, said she felt the team was getting pushed onto a second-class field and that she had to step up and do something, “;not only for us, but for the future generations.”;

She said the boys have a “;beautiful field.”;

“;(Their) field is always taken care of. We have huge rocks on the field,”; she said, adding she cut her ankle on a rock while sliding into home plate.
