7 surfers rescued at Waikiki, Ala Moana
POSTED: Sunday, March 21, 2010
Lifeguards rescued seven surfers, assisted 27 others and warned more than 500 people about high surf yesterday at Ala Moana and Waikiki beaches.
“;It's not unusual to have surf at this time of the year, what is unusual is the size of the swell,”; said Honolulu Emergency Services Departments spokesman Bryan Cheplic.
Waves on Oahu's south shore had 6- to 10-foot faces with some sets in the 12-foot range, Cheplic said.
A high surf advisory is in effect for south shores until 6 p.m. today.
Surf is expected to continue in the 8- to 12-foot range through this afternoon and lower by evening, the Weather Service said.
A high surf advisory means large breaking waves, dangerous rip currents and beach erosion in advisory areas.
“;Check with a lifeguard before heading into the water,”; Cheplic said.
