After focusing on an exam for much of the day, Kaia Parnaby aced another tough test last night.

The Hawaii freshman stayed up until 2 a.m., preparing for her speech midterm, then tossed a two-hit shutout against No. 13 California to lead the Rainbow Wahine to a 3-0 win in the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament.

Parnaby rung up a season-high 12 strikeouts while improving to 11-4 and got all the run support she needed when Kelly Majam led off the bottom of the first with a home run.

“;When Coach told me I had the ball tonight, I was pretty edgy about it,”; Parnaby said. “;I had all last night and today, even though I had an exam, to mentally prepare myself.”;

Even with a start against a ranked opponent looming, Parnaby made sure she had her priorities straight during the day.

“;Midterm first, then Cal,”; she said.

Parnaby's gem gave the Wahine (21-10) their second win over a ranked team this season, and snapped a three-game losing streak against the Golden Bears (22-6).

Cal enters today's rematch with a 16-9 lead in the all-time series and had outscored UH 28-4 in the previous six meetings dating back to 2004.

UH head coach Bob Coolen recalled getting two wins against Cal early in his tenure—“;After that they had our number, we couldn't buy a win anywhere.”;

That trend continued into Thursday when Cal's Valerie Arioto (11-4) struck out 17 UH hitters in a 5-0 win.

But Majam, who homered twice against Lipscomb the night before, sparked the Wahine with her second leadoff homer in as many games.

That gave Parnaby some breathing room on her way to her sixth shutout of the season.

“;I felt really good warming up,”; Parnaby said. “;It came right from the word go and I knew I had to get on top of them early just so we had a chance considering they're a good hitting lineup.”;

Arioto also got into a groove after giving up Majam's homer, retiring 10 straight hitters from the first through fourth innings. She finished with eight strikeouts while giving up just four hits.

Alexandra Aguirre broke the string with a walk to lead off the fifth. She was sacrificed to second and reached third on a ground out. Katie Grimes' pop up then dropped in among three Cal fielders behind second base, allowing Aguirre to give UH a 2-0 lead.

With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Melissa Gonzalez singled and went to second on an error. Pinch runner Brynne Buchanan went to third on a ground out and scored when Arioto's pitch eluded catcher Lindsey Ziegenhirt on Jenna Rodriguez's swinging third strike.

Parnaby allowed just one Cal player to reach second through six innings, but raised the tension by walking Taylor Kelly and hitting Jordan Wallace with two out in the seventh to bring Arioto, Cal's leading home run hitter, to the plate.

“;I didn't even think about it,”; Parnaby said of the pressure situation. “;Katie (UH's catcher) came out to me and said, 'We've got places to be.' “;

Parnaby then ran the count full before getting Arioto to strike out swinging to end the game.

The tournament closes today with UH playing Lipscomb at noon and Cal at 2 p.m.
