Sea Warriors sweep doubleheader
Hawaii Pacific remains first in the PacWest after the men's baseball team swept Academy of Art in a doubleheader yesterday in Moraga, Calif.
HPU beat the Urban Knights 9-6 in the opener and followed that with a 7-1 win. In Game 1, Kale Sumner led the Sea Warriors with three hits, two runs and three RBIs, as pitcher Michael Greene earned his fourth win of the season.
Caelen O'Meara managed to slow the Urban Knights' offense in the nightcap, denying any runs and allowing seven hits.
The Sea Warriors have played eight games in five days and have four more to go on their 10-day road trip.
Hawaii Hilo softball splits 2 on road
The Hawaii-Hilo softball team hit a sour note in an 11-3 loss to Dixie State, but bounced back in the nightcap with a 7-5 victory yesterday in St. George, Utah.
The Vulcans started strong with a two-run lead, but Shantae Hunter sparked Dixie State's offense with a home run, followed with a triple by Cassie Merrill. The Red Storm racked up 10 runs on 10 hits in the second inning and the game ended three innings later due to the mercy rule.
It appeared that Dixie State would sweep the Vulcans after leading 4-1 in the nightcap, but UH-Hilo fought back with a five-run fifth inning to secure its second-place standing in the PacWest. Sierra Green went 3-4 for the Vulcans, picking up a home run and two RBIs.
