Private events at HPD facilities halted after Star-Bulletin inquiry

The Honolulu Police Department will refrain from holding private events, such as a casting call held two weeks ago for a TV series pilot, at HPD facilities, following a Star-Bulletin inquiry.
The casting call for the CBS-TV pilot of the remake of “;Hawaii Five-0”; was held March 5 in a conference room at the Police Department's main station on South Beretania Street.
“;We checked with the Ethics Commission after receiving your inquiry and will be following Chuck Totto's advice to have future events conducted away from HPD facilities,”; said Caroline Sluyter, HPD spokeswoman, in a written e-mail.
Totto, the city Ethics Commission executive director, would not comment specifically on the casting call; however, he told the Star-Bulletin that generally, city offices should be used for city purposes and not for private or commercial purposes.
The casting call was for a private company.
HPD spokeswoman Michelle Yu said shortly after the casting call, “;It was an administrative decision to allow the casting call to take place here.”; The department had in the past used an HPD office for a casting call for a previous TV series.
The room was used for convenience, so officers could go there before or after their shifts, she said.
More than 100 police officers and civilian HPD employees went there to pick up applications and to turn in the completed forms with their photos either in uniform and/or their head shots.
