A 38-year-old man awaiting trial in state court for attempted murder for setting fire to a downtown high-rise apartment says he was drunk and upset that his wife had an affair with a resident of the apartment.

Zhan Hang Yu is facing charges of first- and second-degree attempted murder and first-degree arson for setting fire to a 26th-floor apartment of Kukui Tower on June 2.

There were four people inside the apartment. One suffered burns to his legs. The others suffered smoke inhalation.

Yu told one of three court-appointed mental health experts who examined him last October, “;I use the gas, just upset, this guy sleep with my wife almost one year ago.”;

The Honolulu Fire Department said the arsonist poured an accelerant under the front door of the apartment and ignited it. Yu said he used gasoline. But he said he did not intend to kill anybody.

He also suffered burns to both arms and legs and was taken to Straub Clinic & Hospital. Medical personnel at the hospital took a sample of his blood, which registered 0.193 blood-alcohol content 2 1/2 hours after the fire started. A driver is considered drunk under state law if his blood-alcohol content measures 0.08 or higher.

Mental health experts disagreed about whether Yu was mentally fit to stand trial. Two said he was fit while one said he was not.

Yu settled the disagreement this week by declaring himself fit. Trial is scheduled for June.
