Rainbow Wahine blank Lipscomb

Alexandra Aguirre lifted the Hawaii softball team with a home run in the third inning, helping the Rainbow Wahine (19-9) defeat Lipscomb 3-0 in the Spring Fling tournament yesterday.

UH pitcher Stephanie Ricketts notched eight strikeouts in seven innings, improving her record to 9-5.

Lipscomb (20-3) upset No. 13 California (19-5), 1-0, earlier in the afternoon before falling to the Wahine.

UH faces California and Lipscomb at 5 and 7 p.m. today at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Lipscomb and California face off at 3 p.m.

Yogi selected to USA A2 team

Punahou product Sydney Yogi, a sophomore libero on the Texas volleyball team, was one of 24 players named to the USA Volleyball women's national A2 team, it was announced yesterday.

As reported last week, Hawaii sophomore hitter Kanani Danielson was also selected for the team that will train in Tempe, Ariz., from May 24 to 28, and compete in the USA Open National Championships in Phoenix, May 29 to June 1.

Danielson was one of 10 hitters and Yogi one of four liberos chosen after last month's tryouts. The A2 team is for players who still have collegiate eligibility remaining.

Louisville tennis beats UH

In its first home match in more than two months, the 37th-ranked Hawaii men's tennis team suffered a loss to No. 12 Louisville 5-2 yesterday.

UH's Leo Rosenberg beat Viktor Maksimcuk 7-6, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, and teammate Andreas Weber improved to 8-4 with a win on the No. 3 court.

Top-ranked USC sinks UH

The fifth-ranked Hawaii water polo team dropped an exhibition match, 9-7, to No. 1 USC yesterday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex.

The Trojans led 7-2 at the half, but the Rainbow Wahine scored three goals in the final quarter while holding USC from scoring.

HPU players are all-conference

Hawaii Pacific women's basketball head coach Jeff Harada was named PacWest coach of the year after leading the Sea Warriors to their first conference championship and a berth into the NCAA Division II tournament in his third year of coaching.

HPU's Jazzmin Awa-Williams, Mana Hopkins, and Genesis Lewis claimed first-team honors, while Paris Gravely was named to the PacWest second team. Hopkins was also awarded PacWest player of the week honors for last week.

Brigham Young-Hawaii picked up two honorable mentions in Richelle Fenenbock and Dara Tompkison. Hawaii-Hilo guard Hina Kimitete was also an honorable mention.

Alves claims weekly honor

Brigham Young-Hawaii's Lucas Alves has been selected as the final PacWest men's basketball player of the week, adding to his player of the year honors.

Alves, a senior guard for the Seasiders, led his team to the West Region final, where the Seasiders fell to Cal Poly Pomona 78-75.

Alves averaged 23 points and eight rebounds per game while shooting 51.7 percent from the field for the season.

2 earn PacWest softball honors

Chaminade's Keli Grace Kaowili-Sanitan racked up six runs, five doubles, a triple, and four RBIs to claim PacWest softball player of the week honors.

Kaowili-Sanitan, an outfielder, had a .556 on-base percentage last week and has helped the Silverswords win nine of their last 12 games.

Hawaii-Hilo's Amber Waracka was named PacWest pitcher of the week. She went undefeated with four complete-game shutout with a 0.00 ERA in four starts and had one other appearance last week.
