Guinea pigs need specialized diet

QUESTION: Is there anything we can feed our guinea pig besides his pellet food?

ANSWER: High-quality grass hay should also always be made available to him. It satisfies his need to gnaw. The Humane Society recommends very small amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables daily. Since guinea pigs cannot manufacture Vitamin C, he needs a very small amount of items such as kale, strawberries and dark leafy greens. Pellets should make up the bulk of your pet's diet and he should be fed twice daily.
