Fast start powers Saint Louis

Derek Nakasato got in his licks early.

The Crusaders right fielder went 2-for-3 with a double and two-run single to spark a seven-run first inning for Saint Louis, which battered Pac West 10-3 to open its season in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu yesterday at Central Oahu Regional Park.

After Pac West (0-2) scored in the top of the first, the Crusaders (1-0) struck back in the bottom half of the inning. After Jordan Fukumoto grounded out to short to lead off the home half, Nakasato doubled and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

Nakasato added a two-run single later in the inning as the Crusaders batted around.

Saint Louis added one run in both the second and third innings to push the lead to 9-1 before Pac West responded in the fifth.

Kellen Abe's double off Saint Louis pitcher Jaris Popaca-Falefa drove home Micah Witty and Kyle Nakagawa to make it 9-3.

Saint Louis' Noa Siegfried picked up the win while Pac West's Abe, who went the distance, was tagged with the loss.
