City Councilman Charles Djou yesterday filed papers to run in a special election to fill the vacant U.S. 1st Congressional District seat once held by Neil Abercrombie.
He is the only well-known Republican in the race.
Two other major candidates, Ed Case, who represented the 2nd Congressional District from 2003 to 2006, and Senate President Colleen Hanabusa, are Democrats. They also have filed nomination papers to run in the May 22 all-mail election.
Seven other candidates also filed papers: Republicans C. Kaui Jochanan Amsterdam, Douglas Crum and John Giuffre; Democrats Rafael Del Castillo and Philmund Lee; and nonpartisan candidates Karl F. Moseley and Kalaeloa Strode.
